Movie Marathon: BDSM & Other Unconventional Love

50 Shades of Grey might be all the rage now, but a movie based on a fan fiction based on the Twilight series is possibly the last thing I’ll spend time and money watching.

If you’re looking for something beyond the usually rom-com, check out these films on relationships which are as unconventional as they get.

Movie: Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles
Year: 1994
Running time: 122 minutes
Watch for: A up and coming Brad Pitt as the tortured Louis de Pointe du Lac, a deliciously good looking Tom Cruise as the charismatic Lestat de Lioncourt, and talented 12 year old Kristen Dunst as a century old vampire and Louis’s lover.

And yes, Dunst first on screen kiss was with Brad Pitt. Which she pretty much declared was disgusting. Jealous?

Movie: Before Sunrise
Year: 1995
Running time: 101 minutes
Watch for: Remember how you fell in love? Conversations deep into the night, an urgency to fill in each other on your lives, lest they miss out on something, however minuscule.

Before Sunrise allows us a glimpse of this intimate and vulnerable moment between 2 strangers who met on a train, and the inevitable bittersweetness that comes when the night ends. Will they ever see each other again?

Movie: Secretary
Year: 2002
Running time: 111 minutes
Watch for: Before there was Christian Grey and Ana Steele, there was the original E. Edward Grey and Lee Holloway.

Why the award winning Secretary kick 50 Shades of Grey’s butt:

1. It was made more than a decade before 50 Shades of Grey.
2. It has a better storyline.
3. Its characters are more real and relatable.
4. Its characters wound up better versions of themselves at then end of the film.
5. It is a kooky film that doesn’t try too hard to take itself seriously.

And when it comes to BDSM scenes, 50 Shades of Grey is all about making-out-in-the-elevator, touching-thigh-under-the-table, whips, handcuffs, blindfolds etc etc. Yawn. Show me something we haven’t already seen in countless other movies. But in Secretary? You’ll just have to find out for yourselves!

Movie: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Year: 2004
Running time: 108 minutes
Watch for: What happens when you and your ex erases memories of each other and meet again as strangers? Will you find yourselves falling in love again?

Jim Carrey shows off his acting chops in this rare non comical appearance, and possibly best performance of his career. Paired by powerhouse Kate Winslet, this film will get you thinking the next time you wonder if you’re better off without your memories.

She found that even in such a tiny country, there are many places she hasn’t been, things she hasn’t tried, and old places are being revamped into new ones all the time. Soon, she saw the places around her like how tourists would see them, but better – fresh and yet familiar. Kia then sets out to plan itineraries for her weekend escapes and it became a habit she enjoyed. And now she wants to share them with you. After all, there are 52 weekends in year and only so many holidays you can take. What if you can turn your dates with family and friends into holidays every week? Check out her adventures at
